Jelly has accepted her puppies, so they are gently nudged in the direction of her nipples, so that they can begin the nurse.

Several hours later, the pups need no help from us to nurse as they feel the need. We believe in letting them set their own schedule, so long as their weights increase as we expect to see, and they show no signs of distress. We'll make sure Jelly is cleaning them for the first few days, and assist her if she needs it. Newborns cannot urinate or defecate on their own - they need the mother's stimulation to do so. We sometimes assist this by cleaning them with baby oil and a cotton ball.
