Bullmarket had its beginnings many years ago, when I took my first dog in the ring at the tender age of seven years old. It was the beginning of a life long obsession with all things canine.
As a third generation dog breeder, I have the legacy of my Grandmother and mother to uphold, along with their traditions of healthy dogs, home raised and bred only for the very best of reasons. I became involved with my Grandmother's mastiffs from early childhood, but decided I wanted something smaller when I decided to venture into dog breeding myself. I knew that I wanted something strong, muscular and bold - a big dog, in a small package. French Bulldogs seemed to fit that bill, and I obtained my first one in 1990. It was the beginning of a love affair with a breed that has given me more than I can ever give back.
French Bulldog are a passion for me, but they are definately not how we make our living. When not obsessing over the Frenchies, I work as a programmer and web designer, and I also design and maintain frenchbulldogz.org, frenchbulldogphotos.com, frenchbulldoglinks.com and frenchbulldogwiki.com. So, yeah - just a little bit Frenchie-crazed over here. ;)
We're located just outside of the small village of Mount Forest, Ontario. Mount Forest is about an hour and change north of Guelph, or two hours from Toronto. We have just over four acres of property, with an entire floor of our house pretty much devoted the sole comfort of the Frenchies. The dogs have their own fenced play yard to enjoy, with almost forty acres of protected forest behind us with rambling walking trails for the dogs to explore with us. All in all, it's a pretty idyllic lifestyle.
We plan litters only when we believe a breeding will produce something which we ourselves plan on keeping. As a hobby
breeder, it's of prime importance to me that my puppies go to homes
where they will live the same sort of lifestyle that they do here at home with me. If you're under the
impression that "dogs belong in the back yard", please inquire
some place else. Frenchies do NOT belong in kennels, yards or "runs"
- they belong in your lap, your life and your heart.
We have based our breeding program on a carefully thought out combination of English (specifically, Wilcott, Paling and Tommyville) and American (Cox and Sonlit, in particular) lines. We are firm believers that line breeding, if done judiciously and for the *right* reasons, is the best way to establish healthy, conformationally consistent, sound French Bulldogs. We believe in a balanced French Bulldog - one with a strongly arched neck, moderate flatness of face, solidly muscled body, adequate length of back, and mid range of weight. Our ideal goal for a male is that of a French Bulldog who resembles a strong little stallion, with arched neck, proud head and ear carriage, alert gaze, moderate roach created by muscle (not spinal deformity) and tight feet. We value health above all other aspects, but are also striving to produce French Bulldogs which are competitive in the show ring.
We've had our share of winning Frenchies at Bullmarket (including Best in Show, Group Winning, Westminster Best of Breed, International Champions and Obedience titled dogs), but our first and most important goal is the breeding of healthy, happy pets. All of our breeding stock are health tested for spinal deformities, Von Willebrands disease and hip dysplasia. Healthy Frenchies start from tested Frenchies.
We feed a home cooked, all natural diet to our Frenchies, and strongly enourage our puppy buyers to do so, as well. We follow Dr Jean Dodd's revised vaccination schedule, and request that our puppy buyers also follow it. You can learn more about our feelings on canine nutrition and immunities in our articles section.
All pets are placed on limited, non breeding contracts. We prefer not to ship, so priority is given to buyers willing to pick up their pups in person. We do not sell "breeding Frenchies", and only rarely have show quality pups available for sale. Pups sold as show quality are placed on co ownership only.
If you'd like to discuss the possibility of having one of our babies join your family, please feel free to email us. Barb or I will be happy to get back to you with more information about our upcoming litters. Please note that we do maintain a waiting list -- and a fairly long one at that -- but we do not take deposits to hold unborn puppies. Click here to read an article on why deposits are a bad idea.
