Friday Zen – Morrissey Loves Black Bears

80s alt/new wave Musician Morrissey (along with a host of other celebs) is asking the UK Government to end the long standing tradition of using North American black bear skin to make the distinctive hats worn by the Buckingham Palace Guardsmen.

Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood and several other British designers have offered up alternative design suggestions for the tall, black fur caps which have been worn by the Queen’s Guard since 1815.

I’m all in favor of less trapping of black bears for use as stupid looking fur hats, but the mind reels at the idea of what kind of hat Vivienne Westwood might have in mind for the poor beleaguered Guardsmen, who already have to contend with idiotic tourists trying to break their concentration.

Queens Guardsmen give Vivienne Westwood designed hats a trial run, report that hats 'led to reduced mocking incidents, lessened urge to smack tourists in the head with bayonet'

In any case, this post has all pretty much just been an excuse to go looking for a video of the Smiths doing one of my favorite songs, “How Soon is Now?” (which allows me to counter Sean’s ‘please for the love of God stop playing that song’, with  ” I have to listen to it – It’s for my WRITING“).

Thanks, internet, for making time wasting something I can excuse as semi-work related!

Friday Zen – Movies We’d Like to See

I have always loved Pride and Prejudice, and I’ve always harbored a sneaking suspicion that Lizzie Bennet could kick some serious ass if you ever backed her into a corner.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see that ass kicking moment captured on film?

Friday Zen – what is the internet?

Have you ever wondered what the internet is actually made of? And no, it’s really, really not a “series of tubes“.

Here’s the video that explains it all, once and for all.

Friday Zen: One Day

“One Day” is possibly the most beautiful song I’ve heard in recent years.

It might possibly be more beautiful because of its dichotomy – it’s a reggae song about reconciliation between Jews and Muslims, performed by an Orthodox Hassidic Rabbi named Matisyahu (who was born Matthew Paul Miller).

Matisyahu’s full story is much more weird and wonderful than I can convey in a sentence, so read more about him on his own website.

Friday Zen – Sprinkler Moose(es)

Didn’t you love playing in the sprinkler when you were a kid? We had a pool, but I still don’t think anything came close to the sheer joy of running back and forth underneath the sprinkler on a hot, hot day. The only thing possibly better was a nice, cold drink of that uniquely rusty tasting sprinkler water, fresh from the hose. Yum.

Apparently, Moose feel the same way – baby moose in particular. Also? I don’t care what the grammar police say – the plural of Moose SHOULD be mooses, simply because it’s so much fun to say.

Moose in a sprinkler – it doesn’t get more zen than that.
